Academia Artium Didacticvm Eqviorvm in Liberti

Irén Aina Vassrusten Bastholm, Decan of Neuroscience and Dentistry

Many things made me who I am today. I have always been urged to think for myself and that has brought me many places, including here. This does not mean that I didnt get any shocks or wake up calls along my way. Several times I have had to laugh at myself for believing something just because someone said it was so. Through my work in the Academia I hope to make more horse people in this world think about what they are doing and why. Its also exciting for me to get this opportunity to use my knowledge in equine dentistry and neuroscience to educate others.

So, how did I know this was the right way for me? Well, I have always felt that horses should be kept in a way that is as close to what is natural for them as we can give them. My own horses have actually showed me how much it means to them. I used to have a gelding that was due for retirement. Well, letting him live outside with other horses made him appear to be 10 years younger. My horses have given me several episodes like that, so most of the wake up calls I mentioned, I got directly from them.

My own horses also made me start studying equine dentistry. After reading Spencer LaFlure's article "Natural Balance in the Equine Mouth" I was convinced that this definitely was the best approach for my horses' mouths. I wrote an e-mail to Spencer, and was told that there was no one doing Natural Balance Dentistry in Europe at that time. This left me with two choices; I could either pay to have someone flown over from USA every time my horses needed dental care, or I could go there and learn it myself. I chose the last option.

Studying neuroscience on the other hand didnt initially have anything to do with my horses. It had more to do with my natural curiosity and desire to understand how the brain works. Now Im very happy to be able to combine my interests here in the Academia.
